


A septic backup is one of the most stressful problems a homeowner can face, but it is rarely the first sign that something is wrong. In many cases, the drainfield gives warnings before wastewater backs up into a toilet, tub, shower, or sink. Knowing what to look for can help you call for service earlier, protect your home, and reduce the risk of a larger septic repair.
Your drainfield is the part of the septic system that receives liquid wastewater after solids settle in the septic tank. The soil below and around the drainfield helps treat that wastewater before it moves back into the environment. When the drainfield becomes overloaded, clogged, saturated, compacted, or damaged, wastewater may no longer move through the system the way it should.
A septic tank is buried, and the drainfield is usually hidden under grass. That makes it easy to assume everything is fine as long as water still goes down the drain. Unfortunately, early drainfield problems can start quietly. You might notice slow drains after a rainy week, a patch of unusually green grass, or a faint sewage smell outside before you ever see wastewater inside the home.

A healthy septic system should not create persistent sewage odors in the yard. EPA lists sewage odors around the septic tank or drainfield as a malfunction warning sign.1 Odors can come from surfacing wastewater, ventilation issues, tank problems, or drainfield failure. Either way, they should not be ignored.
Odors are especially important around lakefront homes, camps, and properties with children or pets. Wastewater that reaches the surface can contain pathogens and can create a health risk. If you smell sewage near the system, reduce water use and call a professional for evaluation.
Standing water, damp spots, or wastewater over the septic tank or drainfield are clear warning signs. EPA includes standing water or damp spots near or over the tank or drainfield in its list of septic malfunction symptoms.1 Vermont DEC also warns against ignoring surfacing wastewater and advises homeowners not to redirect wastewater to ditches, storm sewers, streams, abandoned wells, or the ground because it can create health and environmental hazards.2

A soggy drainfield does not always mean the system is permanently failed, but it does mean something needs attention. The cause might be excessive household water use, roof drains or sump pumps discharging toward the field, damaged lines, soil compaction, groundwater, or a system that has reached the end of its service life.
Homeowners sometimes think greener grass over the drainfield is a good sign. It may not be. EPA identifies bright green, spongy, lush grass over the septic tank or drainfield, even during dry weather, as a sign of septic malfunction.1
This can happen when wastewater is getting too close to the surface and feeding the grass with excess moisture and nutrients. If the area is also wet, soft, or smelly, treat it as a serious warning sign. Keep people and pets away from the area until the system can be evaluated.
Gurgling from toilets, tubs, showers, or sinks can point to airflow problems, blockages, or a septic system that is not accepting wastewater correctly. EPA includes gurgling sounds in the plumbing system as a possible malfunction symptom.1
A single gurgling fixture may have a simple plumbing explanation, but multiple fixtures making noise, especially with slow drainage, should be investigated. If the sound is paired with odors, wet spots, or repeated backups, the drainfield or septic line may be under stress.
Drainfields need open, uncompacted soil and controlled water flow. EPA recommends keeping vehicles off the drainfield, planting trees an appropriate distance away to reduce root intrusion risk, and directing roof drains, sump pumps, and other rainwater drainage away from the drainfield area because excess water can slow or stop wastewater treatment.3

If you suspect a drainfield problem, start by reducing water use. Avoid extra laundry loads, long showers, and unnecessary water use until the system is checked. Do not dig into the drainfield, redirect wastewater, drive over the area, or attempt a repair yourself. Vermont DEC advises homeowners to hire a licensed designer or engineer to evaluate failing systems and assist with permits if needed.2
