For relatively flat areas, a uniform layer of straw mulch applied over freshly seeded topsoil is often sufficient to prevent the soil from washing away during light rains. These blankets are made of straw, wood fiber, or other plant residues woven into a biodegradable mesh mat. The blanket is rolled over the seeded area and staked firmly into place.
